Getting sexual health checks is a part of our health that is often overlooked. This is often due to stigma around the topic. In addition, some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as Chlamydia, may show no symptoms until it is quite advanced.

At Bayside Family Medical, we encourage you to think of sexual health screening as a part of your general health check. We provide discreet, informed sexual health advice and tests, often non-invasive, to screen for problems.

ALSO KNOWN AS HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS, HIV/AIDS

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the immune system which makes it difficult for the body to fight infections. HIV can be passed on through the bodily fluids (such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid and anal fluid) of a person who has HIV with a detectable viral load, usually by having sex without a condom or sharing injecting equipment.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is inflammation or infection of the reproductive system in the pelvis. PID can be caused by STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and mycoplasma genitalium. PID only affects people with a vagina and uterus.
